Today’s upper body workout at 7am consisted of shoulder presses, pushups, pullups, bench press and dumbbell rows. I find that pushups are a great warm up and did my first 100 pushups during this upper body workout. I like to alternate between pushups, pullups and shoulder presses.
That can get you warmed up pretty fast. I want to publicly thank Joe M. for his tips on doing pullups. I still cannot do one pullup without the assist machine, but he has given me several good tips on doing pullups. Maybe that is why I did my best pullups today and have my assistance down to 60lbs with 5 reps. I think that pullups deserves it’s own ‘benefits of pullups’ post, but in short, he recommends to hold the bar with your thumb over the bar and to breathe in when pulling up to the top. They both seem to be working for me so I will keep on doing them that way, thanks Joe!
Shoulder press I am still not able to do more than 105lbs and that is okay, maybe next week, I am still struggling with the last rep so I am not ready yet. Dumbbell rows were definitely a bit stronger with my current high of 50lbs so I think 55lbs next week is a reasonable goal. Bench press also felt good at 165lbs so I did try 175lbs and that was fine, so I should be able to go up to 180lbs with good form sometime over the next couple of weeks.
Of course it is not the amount of weight that we are lifting which is going to give us the best results for building a better mind and body, rather it is doubling down on having real food, being consistent with our strength workouts, good rest and good form.
