Now usually, I like to take my day off from working out on Saturday. Just so happened that I did not yesterday, so I will take the day off today. When I say day off, I do not mean that I am heading over to Gino’s Pizzeria. I know there are many plans that encourage eating whatever you want on your day off. Of course, you can always eat whatever you want, any day, but for best results, I think it is best to stay on course, and if you want to change things up, look for a new recipe or try out a new dish that feels best to you. I think that many of us who have been in the overweight, large, soft category, have issues, or inability to control quantities, especially of sweets, cookies, cake, chips, fries, pretzels, cheese doodles, all the goodies that we grew up on and assumed must be great for us cause it is wrapped in such a beautiful and colorful package, not to mention that our own parents bought this ‘food’ into the house and always put it out for guests. So, who would imagine that our own folks were serving us foods that were not really in our best interest. The irony is remembering all those times when you or your parents were sitting around a dining room table and noshing , snacking on chips and wondering why they could not lose weight!
So, my suggestion is to not go back to those sweets that got you to the size which you are working so hard now to trim, and possibly pretty drastically. Just ask yourself if the snickers bar will really be worth it? Will the Ben & Jerry’s really give you the happiness that you are looking for in that pint of creamy milk and sugar. Hey, I am the first one to admit that I was a total vanilla heath bar crunch addict. Yes, intensely sweet and sure helped to pump up my waist line to 46/48″. Did I wear 48″ pants? How many guys do you know will wear that size pants? I got 42″ and sucked it in, but as I have found out over the last 8 months, you just cannot hide the bulges. Back in the spring of 2012, I had met up with a friend, and thought that I looked pretty dapper, or at least semi trim, because I had on my 42″ waist pants with a sweater on top, and I thought it hid my protruding stomach pretty well..and the pants and the sweater were darker colors, slimming as people say.
And I happened to run into this friend a couple of weeks ago…if I had been able to hide my pear shape, she would not have exclaimed several times, “wow, you were so fat before!” She is not one to mince words, very much on the blunt side. So, we cannot hide it. Think about that before you tell yourself that your day off is a free day to go back to the foods that were hurting your physique in the past. Do not succumb to the urge to just have a few pancakes, if possible. If you really think you can control your quantitiy, it will probably not have much of an impact. The problems begin when you cannot stop, you cannot stop eating those pepperidge farm cookies or pretzels. They are addictive, because, they are!
So, take your day off in a way that gives your body as much rest as possible from heavy lifting or exercise. Take a stroll, hike, walk in the park, get together with family or friends, catch up on errands, clean your apartment, whatever it might be, just don’t end the day with a belly full of lasagna, coke and garlic bread and be belching and burping the rest of the night trying to process that stuff. You just spent a whole week, month or half a year feeding your body real food. Why stop now? Have you had enough of knowing that you need a man bra if you are a guy? Or knowing that spring and summer are just weeks away and you still are not even close to the size 4 or 6 that you crave if you are a woman? Have you had enough? Just say it, enough already! You can inspire yourself to keep taking the right actions that will get you to the shape that you want. Be the artist and sculpt. You can get fruit, vegetables, fish, chicken, tofu ( I am going to be writing more about tofu because I have to find a way to lower my cholesterol which has always been high, but now I am making a very determined effort to see if I can do it without the statins that my doctor is suggesting), seeds, berries, a glass of wine. Think about the trim fit you that will be revealed in a short three to six months, so, yes, take a day off from your heavy workout, but not from the real foods that are going to get you the real physical transformation that you want.
