I started with deadlifts about 5 months ago, not immediately when I started Hashi Mashi, but almost a month into it. I had seen a site called stronglifts that teaches a method called 5×5. The general idea which I think has worked great for me is to be consistent and gradual. I started with a 45lb olympic bar, just the bar, nothing else. And pretty much at least once a week, I did deadlifts, 5 sets and only one repetition per set because they are pretty taxing. Some weeks I added no weight, but most weeks I added at least 5lbs or 10lbs or 2.5lbs. Today at my favorite YMCA in New York City, I did five sets again, starting at 135lb, then 145lb, then 155lb, 165lb which I was already feeling the weight alot, and for my final set did 175lb which is my new high.
