So as you know, I have taken upon myself the goal to swim consistently as a baseline for getting back into shape, mentally and physically, and so far have been able to make that happen for the last 14 days. And since that is going pretty well, I wanted to add another component, and have decided to use pushups as the next piece of the get back into shape puzzle. Whereas swimming, at least to me seems like a test of endurance and cardio, Pushups are a pretty standard test of strength, can be done pretty much anywhere, no, I am not suggesting they should be done during intermission on broadway, but it seems like a good way to get stronger. In fact, I remember reading an article that the main physical exercise routine done by Herschel Walker the famous running back was 1,000 pushups a day which he started back in high school and continues to do today at close to 50 years old.
So today we will start the pushup challenge. The goal is to reach 100 consecutive pushups. I have no clue how long that will take or if it is even possible, but let’s start.
I am going to use the system developed by http://hundredpushups.com. He has the whole schedule workout and description of what makes a good pushup over there. And he also has a pushup logger to log your sets.
First we have to do the initial test. Do as many good form pushups as possible.
I will be right back after I try!
Alright, I did twenty. For that amount, he suggests to do a workout of five sets of pushups, resting one minute between sets:
set 1:10…did 10 11:32
set 2:12..did 12 11:34
set 3: 7…did 7 11:36
set 4: 7…did 7 11:38
set 5: and max out with at least 9 for the last set…and the last set I did..11…whew….couldn’t get back off the floor after 11. So that is not too bad, 47 pushups in 8 minutes. Next time will be on Tue July 12th. Keep you posted and keep us posted here if you join in!
So I will try that out now. Don’t forget to breathe in when you lower yourself and breathe out when you push up.
Why don’t you join in? I am pretty sure that my friend Stevie John will, hope you will too!
