My Weight Loss Journey – Introduction
June 23, 2012 – So today is the second day of Hashi Mashi. This means no bread, no pasta, no bagels (boo hoo), no snickers, no ice cream, no pizza (boo hoo), and a lot of other no’s.
Can having no bread, no to the staff of life, help to have a better life? I have no idea how this will work out, but I am willing to try it, try anything, that is better than constantly craving foods that are not even foods.
I have read in various places online theories linking present-day wheat to various physiological reactions, like increases in blood sugar and even depression.
This is spoken about at length by Dr. William Davis in his book ‘Wheat Belly’. I am also aware that the ‘Paleo’ community, spearheaded by Dr. Lorence Cordain and Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple also writes about the deleterious effects of bread, flour foods.
And to top it off, I have even read Dr. John Mcdougall who promotes the Vegan diet, he has said a similar idea, that bread, which is processed and ground wheat, by definition is already going to raise your sugar levels higher because the wheat has already been processed.
So it is interesting that we have meat-eaters and vegan eaters sort of converging and saying the same thing about processed wheat, flour, bread. I figure I can at least try out something which they all seem to agree on which is to focus on vegetables.
On the yes list are vegetables and more vegetables and additional vegetables, raw or sauteed. I have also included nuts and avocado as well as chicken, turkey, and eggs on the yes list.
I started out three days ago at 250lbs in the birthday suit and today when I checked, I was at 249. Yea, that is a big drop for me, a whole pound, no complaints! I have been drinking a lot of water and a lot of water seems to be passing on thru.
Today, for nutrition I had:
Strawberries and almonds in the morning
Hashi Mashi an hour or so later. If you don’t remember, Hashi Mashi is 4 egg whites, pepper, onion, mushrooms, spinach, sauteed in olive oil and served with Hummus and Avocado. I did not have any bread, grr, I am ready to eat a sidewalk!
Then I went swimming for the third day straight. I did 40 laps again and could tell that I was getting stronger because I was able to string more than one together consecutively instead of resting after each one. My high was four in a row. I am sure it will get better if I keep at it.
More water and blueberries and brazil nuts.
Then I went down to union square and Barnes and noble to browse in the Barnes and nobles and guess what, I completely forgot why I was there and did not remember till I was almost in midtown.
Salad with turkey and avocado and I am still pretty hungry, so I will drink more water and get a ‘kitchen wrap’ without the wrap from the energy kitchen on 41st and 2nd because it is pretty close and it has a lot of sauteed vegetables.
By the way, I saw this episode of extreme weight loss with Chris Powell last night which featured the 200lb weight loss of LeRhonda (not sure If I got the spelling right), but that is what motivated me through both my swim today, and my weight workout which I forgot to tell you about.
When I wanted to stop swimming, I just remembered LeRhonda, how she was working out at 433lbs, wow! So I could not give up. Thanks, LeRhonda for the motivation.
After swimming, I went up to the weight room and did squats using the machine 15 repetitions with 70lbs, yea I know that is really light but I have a torn medial meniscus so I just don’t have the strength…YET! I will because I will keep remembering LeRhonda!
I will push myself harder. Then leg curls, 15 reps with 30lbs, dumbbell curls 15 reps with 15lbs, dumbbell press 15 with 15lbs, and then 15 situps.
I know, nothing that will be printed in muscle and fitness, but it is a start for me, so I will not knock it, just improve on it.
I also walked all the way back from union square to midtown at a fast pace in about 30min for a bit more.
So now I will get the wrap, minus the wrap, and ask for beans instead of the wrap and cheese, relax a bit, pop the melatonin and shoot for more sleep at 11 pm if that is even possible.
I think I am really going to be sore and Charley horsed from this.
